Award in Basic Fire Fighting

Accredited Course, MFHEA, EQF/MQF Level 2, License No: 2023-024, Further education course 1 ECTS Credit Ongoing Intake Open
Course Description

The Basic Firefighting module provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental principles and practices of firefighting. It begins with the concept and application of the fire triangle, detailing the necessary elements for combustion and how to control them. Participants will gain an understanding of various types and sources of ignition, including fire point, flashpoint, auto-ignition, and spontaneous combustion. The module covers the identification and management of flammable materials commonly found in various environments, emphasising the need for constant vigilance to prevent fire hazards. Fire hazards and their mitigation are a critical focus, as is the understanding of fire spread in different environments, such as residential, commercial, and industrial settings. The module explores the behaviour of fire and smoke, helping learners understand how fires can escalate and the importance of early detection systems. Participants will be introduced to the classifications of fires and the corresponding extinguishing agents, learning to select and use the appropriate firefighting appliances and equipment for each class of fire.

Delivery of modules: Individual modules will be announced at the start of the programme to fit the work-based learning and practical schedules. Our programmes are structured around a modular system of qualifications, designed to provide flexibility and responsiveness to both learners and industry partners. Given the strong work-based learning component of our programmes, it is not always possible to apply a uniform delivery model across all courses. Therefore, modules may be delivered on a weekly, monthly, or semester basis, depending on the specific requirements of the course and the availability of industry placements.

The exact delivery structure for each module or programme will be announced by the respective trainer at the start of the course, taking into account:

  • the availability of work-placement opportunities,
  • the learners’ and workers’ schedules, and
  • the capacity of host industries to accommodate training and practical experience.

This flexible approach ensures that EVA can maintain high-quality, relevant, and industry-aligned training, while supporting both learners’ educational needs and the realities of the workplace environment.

Entry Requirements

EQF Level 2 or Equivalent qualification in English. In case of no formal qualification in English, Students will be assessed using an online tool to establish their CEFR level. A minimum Level of A2 is needed. Test: https://www.europaschool. co.uk/language-level-test/

Way to Acquire

This module will be assessed via a practical exercise where learners will participate in a simulated emergency situation, and they will be tasked with performing the right intervention in line with situational requirements. The pass mark for the assessment is 50%. Students will be able to resit for a maximum of 2 times (hence a total of 3 attempts), following which, if the student fails, the student will need to refollow the class for that particular module. The module will also have a 1hr multiple choice test during which participants will need to answer a random selection of 30 question. The pass mark for the assessment is 50%. Students will be able to resit for a maximum of 2 times (hence a total of 3 attempts), following which, if the student fails, the student will need to refollow the class for that particular module. The mark from the practical and the multiple choice will be averaged over 100 with the overall pass mark being 50 out of 100.
